Isenkati Oraha! Reaches 1,000 Families

The "Isenkati Oraha!" program has reached a significant milestone, engaging over 1,000 families across Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom in reviving the traditional role of the paternal aunt in child guidance.

The Role of Isenkati

In Bunyoro culture, "Isenkati" refers to the paternal aunt - the sister of one's father. Traditionally, Isenkati plays a major role in raising and grooming children at different stages of life, particularly in providing guidance during puberty.

Why This Matters

The revival of the Isenkati concept emerged from current challenges in child upbringing: - Erosion of cultural norms and values - Impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on children's development - Longstanding changes in family roles and order - Rising teenage pregnancies and early marriages

Program Impact

Through the program, ODF has: - Trained aunts and uncles on their traditional roles - Provided sex and reproductive health education materials - Created safe spaces for youth discussions - Reduced stigma around puberty conversations - Connected families with cultural heritage

Community Response

Communities have embraced the program, with many elders expressing relief that young people are again learning about their bodies and responsibilities through trusted family members rather than unreliable sources.

The program continues to expand, with ODF planning to reach all 8 districts of Bunyoro by end of 2025.
